Valon Halimi is currently incubating the position of Chief of Mission a.i. and Liaison officer to Frontex at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Poland. Before that he was Senior Liaison Officer at the IOM in Bamako, Mali. He has managed various projects for IOM, ranging from direct humanitarian assistance to sustainable socio-economic development in Belgium, Kosovo, Mali and Greece.
Since the summer 2021, Valon was Officer in Charge for CO Belgium and Luxembourg in absence of the Chief of Mission, and this until his transfer to Bamako, in January 2022. Before that he was head of unit, in IOM Brussels, where he oversaw the Migrant Protection Unit.
Besides this, he was also engaged in various short-term assignments; among which he was seconded as technical advisor to Kosovo’s prime minister on irregular migration and border management. He also ensured the start of the EU -IOM Joint Initiative in IOM Bamako, Mali and finally he was assigned as Senior Programme Coordinator for IOM Athens, Greece coordinating the relocation of 1200 unaccompanied and separated children to EU MS from Greece.
He holds a bachelor’s degree on International Relations and Diplomacy and speaks Albanian, English, Dutch and French.
